Secret Street

ALL ABOUT SECRET STREET DRAG RACING...

Street racing is extremely dangerous and one of the most irresponsible driving habits imaginable. To this end Race City is continuing with its program to keep street drags off the street in a more appropriate environment.

Secret Street roars to life every April on Race City's dragstrip. The intent of Secret Street is to provide an opportunity for street racers and drag enthusiasts to race their cars every Friday night at Race City, thereby reducing the amount of street racing in Calgary. Race City provides an informal environment making it easy and fun for anyone to participate.

Vehicles must be 'Street Legal' with proper working muffler systems - and they must be properly registered and insured. All vehicles must meet IHRA safety regulations by passing a simple tech inspection before racing. Racers must have a valid drivers license and must wear a helmet with a rating of SNELL 95 or higher. Helmets are available to borrow for a $5 fee that goes towards purchasing more helmets. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles are all welcome.

The same timing and scoring system used for regular drag racing events is utilized for Secret Street - racers use the 'Christmas Tree' light system and receive time slips detailing reaction times and speed. The water box is open for use.

Gates open at 6:00 p.m., tech starts at 6:00 p.m. and runs until 9:30 p.m. Secret Street racing begins at 7:30 p.m. and can run as late as 11:30 p.m., depending on the number of participants and level of interest.

Concessions are open throughout the event, however there is no alcohol allowed or sold on-site.

Costs are $25.00 for car and driver. Spectators are welcome to observe the rivalry for only $5.00 each. The Secret Street program runs EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT (weather permitting) from mid April to mid Oct.

It's the perfect opportunity to find out what speed your vehicle can really reach, test your reaction time, settle your old rivalries or establish yourself as the local 'top gun'. Take racing off the streets and bring it to Race City where it belongs.

E-mail from a Secret Street participant...

I want to thank everyone that worked at the Secret Street event last Friday night. I always wanted to see what my '71 Corvette would run, but was always intimidated of getting on the track because of my fear of the unknown and lack of experience. All the staff went out of their way to give advice, time and encouragement to help me get down the track. The other racers were very friendly and considerate with a first timer. I just wanted to ask if it is possible to mark the exit lane at the end of the track with a reflector or pylon to indicate where to go. I was really impressed with the concern for safety and understanding displayed by all the event staff. There is no reason to drag on the street with events, facilities and volunteers like those in your community. Keep up the good work.

Returning in 2009 - Secret Street Autocross Racing!

Street racing is extremely dangerous and one of the most irresponsible driving habits imaginable. To this end Race City is expanding it’s drag racing program to include an autocross-style event. Just about anyone can go fast and straight down the quarter mile, but it takes driver skill to handle the twists and turns of an autocross.

The Secret Street Autocross program, which will run every Friday night in conjunction with the Secret Street drag racing program.

Participants will be timed with a stopwatch as they drive a set course inside the oval (under the watchful eye of officials). At the end of each run drivers will receive a time slip to verify times.

Gates open at 6:00 p.m., autocross runs begin at 7:30 p.m. and may run as late as 11:30 p.m. (depending of the number of entrants and the level of interest).

Concessions are open throughout the event, however there is no alcohol allowed or sold on-site.

Cost is $25.00 Car & Driver - this includes both drag racing and autocross.

It is the perfect opportunity to find out what you and your car can do when you have to corner, not just go straight. Bragging rights are up for grabs every Friday night. Racers are encouraged to run both the drag racing program as well as the autocross program all in the same evening.
